What can I expect as a member of the Discovery Youth Band?

During their weekly rehearsals, members will rehearse music for their concert under the direction of Ben Gerrard, Don Zentz, and Dr. Ken Williams. Members will also get to play side-by-side with high school students at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Students will receive enriching instruction and get to enjoy memorable performances.

Who can be a member of the Discovery Youth Band?

All middle school woodwind players, brass players, and percussionists with at least one (1) year of band experienced are invited to participate.

Is there an audition? 

There is no audition. The only criteria is that you have been playing your instrument at least a year and are a member of your school’s middle school band program. 

Is there a fee?

No! It is completely FREE to be a member of the Discovery Youth Band.

Are instruments provided? 

Students are responsible for bringing their own instruments to and from rehearsals. Percussionists should bring their own drumsticks and mallets, but they will use DA’s percussion equipment.

Where are rehearsals located? 

Rehearsals are located in the band room on the campus of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (2445 San Diego Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32207). Parents should drop of students in the large senior parking lot located off of White Avenue (intersects with San Diego Rd.). 

What if my students needs to miss rehearsal?

We understand that life happens and especially if a student is not feeling well, we want them to be cautious. We ask that families miss no more than 3 rehearsals during a semester. Please contact discoveryyouthband@outlook.com in case you have to miss rehearsal.

What level of music will we be performing? 

The DYB seeks to find a good balance between challenging its students, but also setting them up for a successful rehearsal and performance experience. You can expect some fun music for all our concerts, but also music that will promote growth in skill and artistry. 

Where are concerts held? 

Concerts will be on the campus of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (2445 San Diego Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32207).
